Top classes in action at Mondello
The Super Race Sunday at Mondello Park featured the three top racing classes Formula Ireland, Dunlop Super Cars and Fiat Punto Abarths with each category having a Sprint race and a Feature race.
Pole sitter, Quentin Smith lost the Fiat Abarth Sprint race at the first corner as he was passed by Karl
Leonard, who went on to take the chequered flag. Pre-event championship leader, Liam Denning,
who started tenth, finished fifth.
In the Feature race, Denning made amends with a fine victory ahead of Joey Freeburn and Bob Copeland and he retains the series lead.
A fraction of a second separated the top four cars in the Dunlop Supercars Sprint race. Pat Donegan won ahead of his brother, David with Robbie Bolger and Brendan Donegan third and fourth respectively.
The truncated Feature race was won by Johnny Whelan who triumphed ahead of Brendan Donegan.
The first of the Formula Ireland races had a dramatic start when Barry Waugh crashed at first corner. Emmett Queenan held the lead until the seventh lap but seem to miss a gear on the main straight and John O’Hara, in his slipstream, slammed into the Roscommon driver.
The race was stopped a lap later with Cork driver, Alan Dwyer being declared the winner.
With the incidents in the sprint race, only seven cars emerged for the Feature race. John O’Hara marked his return to the series with a fine win.
