Tyson ready for Etienne fight - trainer
Mike Tyson has touched down in Memphis ahead of his off-on bout with Clifford Etienne at the Pyramid Arena on Saturday night.
On Monday, the former world heavyweight champion pulled out of the proposed warm-up for a summer rematch with Lennox Lewis saying he was suffering from flu and a stomach illness.
However, Tyson made an amazing U-turn last night and there was fighting talk from his trainer Freddie Roach after âIron Mikeâ flew in from Las Vegas this morning.
Roach told the Memphis Commercial Appeal: âMike told me this morning, âIâm a fighter and fighters fightâ. He felt better and he ran this morning.
âWeâre going to go after this guy. Weâre going to back him up and weâre going to try to take him out early.â
It has been suggested Tyson only agreed to fight after last-minute pay talks with US cable network Showtime.
However, Roach dismissed claims that his charge was being forced into action against his will.
âI donât think he was pressured,â Roach said. âHe just felt better this morning. He said, âFighters fight and I want to fightâ. â
Promoter Brian Young has also played down fears that the fight could still be in jeopardy as a result of Etienneâs discontent at being treated like a âyo-yoâ.
Etienneâs manager Les Bonano said last night: âWell, weâre back on but weâve got a major problem: Clifford doesnât want to fight now.
âHe said Tyson doesnât call the shots and tell him when heâs going to fight and when he ainât going to fight.
âHe said, âThe world doesnât revolve around Mike Tysonâ.â
However, Young declared this morning: âI think theyâre going to work it out (with Etienne).
âIf not, thereâs going to be a fight. Theyâll just replace him. If Clifford doesnât fight, there will be somebody else that will.
âI can have it done in 15 minutes. Iâve got my brother working on it right now.â
