England Ashes hopes going up in smoke

England are heading for another convincing defeat in the third Ashes Test after conceding a major first-innings lead and then losing an early wicket on an eventful second day at the WACA.

Facing a tricky 11 overs before the close after finally dismissing Australia for 456 to concede a 271-run deficit, England were unable to survive unscathed and lost opener Marcus Trescothick before the close to finish on 33 for one.

The test could be over within three days unless England can hold on tonight.
