Clewlow claws it back for England
England 2, South Africa 2 (result)
England salvaged a 2-2 draw in the second match of their World Cup campaign against South Africa with a penalty corner strike from Mel Clewlow four minutes from time.
The match had started well for England when Helen Grant scored her second goal of the tournament in only the second minute.
However, the lead lasted less than 60 seconds as South Africa went down the other end, won a penalty corner and Johke Koornhof netted the equaliser.
The teams went in at half-time 1-1 but England fell behind to a Pietee Coetzee penalty corner midway through the second half to put the pressure on Tricia Heberle’s side.
But Canterbury defender Clewlow rescued a point with her strike from a set-piece to at least maintain England’s unbeaten record, although the slip has presented their two main rivals for the two semi-final places from Pool B - hosts Australia and Holland – with an advantage.
