Montgomery smashes sprint world record

Tim Montgomery smashed the world 100 metres record as he beat Britain’s Dwain Chambers in the IAAF Grand Prix final in Paris.

Chambers was fastest out of the blocks but he was no match for the brilliant pace which Montgomery produced over the last 50 metres.

Forging ahead with an amazing burst of speed, Montgomery crossed the line in 9.78sec – 0.01sec quicker than fellow American Maurice Greene achieved three years ago in Athens.

It was also a day for Chambers to remember. The 24-year-old Londoner ran 9.87sec for second place which equalled the European record set by Linford Christie when taking the 1993 World title in Stuttgart.

Third was Jon Drummond of the USA in a season’s best 9.97sec.
