Ireland v Germany: Cadettes

After a German victory over Italy earlier in the week, the Irish Cadettes were up against it when they took on the group leaders and although defeated 51-74, the U16 girls put on their best performance of the tournament.

Ireland played well in the opening quarter, staying with the Germans all the way, and taking the lead 10-9 in the eighth minute. It was to be their last lead in the game as a basket from Margret Skuballa in the closing seconds gave Germany a 13-15 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Lorraine Dolan had a super second quarter hitting 5 points, but the Irish girls had their work cut out against the taller Germans.

Three 3-pointers from Germany secured their lead midway through the quarter before a 3-pointer from Fiona Ward finished the quarter 23-38 in favour of Germany.

A brave Irish performance in the third quarter reduced the game to 11-points, Lorraine Dolan putting away 11 of her 14 points in the period.

Ireland's defence kept the visitors to 11 points throughout the quarter with it all to play for in the final period, 42-53 at the end of the third quarter.

Germany took control in the final period and pulled away for a 61-42 lead before a 3-pointer from Rachel Clancy put Ireland back in the game.

Ailish O'Donoghue fouled out, while Kenny and Carrick reduced the deficit, 51-66 with two minutes to play.

Ireland were kept scoreless for the remainder of the game while Germany stretched ahead for a 51, 74 victory.
