French failure means England could face surprise opponents

England's qualification prospects have become much clearer in the wake of the surprise outcome in Group A.

France’s defence of the World Cup ended in dismal failure today after they became the first reigning champions since Brazil in 1966 to bow out in the first round of the tournament.

The 1998 champions were beaten 2-0 by Denmark, who qualify from Group A along with shock troops Senegal after they drew 3-3 with Uruguay.
