Irish must rise to German challenge

MICK McCARTHY accepted yesterday that Germany’s impressive aerial bombardment will present Ireland’s back four with particular problems at set-pieces in tomorrow’s World Cup showdown in Ibaraki.

Six of the eight goals Germany scored against Saudi Arabia to set a World Cup record were scored with the head and they are certain to look to the overhead route against an Irish defence that will be sorely-pressed to counter them.
