Motorsport: McCluskey wins in Mondello

John McCluskey, driving his powerful Peugeot 306, won an exciting second round of the Irish Rallycross Championship at Mondello Park.

For several laps, he tried to overtake series leader, Lawrence Gibson (metro 6R4).

On lap four, he managed to overtake, but there was contact between the pair, allowing Dermot Carnegie (Focus WRC) the opportunity to close on the leading duo.

However, the positions remained unchanged to the chequered flag. Mike Manning (Fiesta) won the B Final and Eddie Kinirons was best in the rally car category.

Cork karter, Brian O’Mahony has finished third in the PF Winter Karting series in Grantham, England. In today’s final round of the series, he was fifth.

Earlier in the race, he moved into second from his fifth qualifying place. He dropped down the order when he encountered traffic and was forced wide onto the grass on one occasion.

He recovered to finish fifth in the race that was enough to clinch third in the series. In today’s Junior Jica race, another Cork karter, James McCarthy was eighth.

In Latton County Cavan, Ronnie Coulter (Astra) was too good for Robert Moffett (Escort) the winner finishing some three seconds ahead after the conclusion of three timed runs.

A tie break decided the outcome of the Cavan Night Navigation Trail. Due to the fact that their engine cubic capacity was smaller than their rivals, victory went to Andy Mackarel/Liam Higgins (Ascona).

Derek Coleman/Conor Maguire (Astra) were second, both crews didn’t incur any penalties.
