Motorsport: Breen wins Cadet series

Craig Breen from Kilkenny celebrated his twelfth birthday with a win and championship victory in the

Nutts Corner Winter Karting series.

Having won the previous two rounds, Breen qualified on pole for the Cadet final with wins in the two qualifying heats.

He made a perfect start and was unchallenged throughout the ten-lap race. Stephen Glass and Stewart Lyness, both from Northern Ireland, were second and third. In the Junior Jica class, Aaron Coby also scored a lights to flag win.

Meanwhile, in England, Brian O’Mahony set the fastest lap in the Formula A race at the Paul Fletcher circuit near Grantham. The 17 year old from Carrigaline’s was in third place at the end of the first lap but was pushed off the track. He rejoined the race at the back of pack and finished fifth, hot on the heels of the leading pack. Another Corkonian, Fermoy’s, James McCarthy was eighth in the Junior Jica race.

In Monaghan, former Hewison Autotest champion, gained his first win of the current season. In the day’s 12 tests, he finished with a 7.6 second winning margin over championship leader, Eamonn Byrne. J.J. Farrell was third.

Byrne extends his lead in the series to 22 points with Farrell second and Sam Johnston in third place.
