Young British hot-shot Darren Manning has set his sights on a Formula One drive next season - as a replacement for former world champion Jacques Villeneuve.

The 21-year-old is desperate to graduate from British American Racing test driver and take the Canadian’s race seat if Villeneuve quits the Brackley team.

Craig Pollock’s recent departure as BAR team principal has left a question mark over Villeneuve’s future and Manning believes he can repeat the success of fellow rookies Jenson Button and Kimi Raikkonen.

‘‘I would love to be given the chance to race with BAR and I think that I could be just as good as Jenson Button or Kimi Raikkonen,’’ he said.

‘‘Jacques still has a year to run on his contract but if he decides to leave now I’d have enough time to get ready for the start of the season.

‘‘I like a challenge and feel that I have what it takes. All I need is the chance to prove myself.’’
