Darts: Adams into last eight

Martin Adams cruised into the quarter-finals of the Paddy Power World Grand Prix Championship with a 3-0 win over Alex Roy in Dublin today.

Adams continued where he left off against Peter Manley and claimed the first set in double-quick time.

The England captain followed up back-to-back maximums in the first leg with a 146 check-out in the third.

Roy’s first real opportunity came in the second leg of the second set, but he missed a double and Adams capitalised to move 2-0 ahead.

The 27-year-old managed to stop the rot with his first attempt at double nine in the next leg.

But Adams went on to claim the second set and completely dominated the third to move into the last eight.

Adams said: ‘‘Alex gave me so many chances by missing doubles at the start and then when he was hitting them he was struggling on doubles at the finish.

‘‘You can’t look at it and say it was a brilliant performance because at the end of the day I wasn’t under any pressure.’’

The 45-year-old will face either Steve Beaton or darts legend John Lowe tomorrow night and he is ready for the challenge.

He added: ‘‘I will play anybody now, I don’t mind who it is.’’

John Part was made to work hard for his 3-1 second-round win over Denis Ovens in Dublin.

The 35-year-old Canadian claimed the first set but Ovens fought his way back to take the second 3-1.

Part moved ahead with a 3-2 success in the third and he held his nerve to win the next.

He said: ‘‘I was expecting a tough game because he is one of the most consistent English players that has ever played the game.

‘‘He is very dangerous and I expect him to play well and he did play fairly well. But I was up to the challenge today.’’

Part will now meet Holland’s Roland Scholten, who claimed his place in the quarter-finals with a routine 3-0 win over Mick Mannings.

The pencil-slim Dutchman said: ‘‘So far so good. I’m still going so I’m pleased.

‘‘But I am expecting a tough game against John because he is a fighter like myself.’’
