Motorsport: Curran wins Carrick as McNulty takes Achill

Richie Curran (Escort Cosworth) ran out an easy winner of the Carrick Suirway Single Stage Rally in Carrick on Suir.

His winning margin of 51 seconds reflecting his dominance of the event. In truth, once Ray Breen spun his Subaru on the first of the three runs, Curran was never seriously threatened.

Willie O'Dwyer, in a Metro, managed to hold on to second after Breen's charge saw him come to within two seconds of second place.

Colm Doyle in a Subaru also had a convincing win in Group N although Roy White (Mitsubishi), who was second in the class and seventh overall, was more concerned with finishing in the top three to allow him qualify for the Billy Coleman Award.

The entertaining Jimmy Lambert (Escort Mk. 2, led home the rear wheel drive contingent.

Out on Achill Island, Tim McNulty, driving a Subaru Impreza, duly took the laurels ahead of the Escort WRC of Tommy Graham, who came through from fourth to finish 19 seconds adrift of the rally winner.

The Mitsubishi of Trevor Cathers was third and Richard Casey, in a Mk. 2 Escort, was fourth.

Meanwhile, on the Tour of Epynt, Irish co-driver, Gerry Hynes partnered Bob Fowden to second place. The rally was won by Melvyn Evans (Escort WRC).
