Motorsport: British superbikes get cash boost

Teams in the British Superbike Championship will benefit from a cash injection of more than £1m over the next two seasons.

In order to maintain the success of the series, British Motorsport Promoters will pump over £1m - to be paid direct to 16 two-rider teams - into the championship over the 2002 and 2003 campaigns.

It is hoped competition will be increased with teams facing promotion and relegation from the group.

Series director Jos Foulston said: ‘‘The British Superbike championship is regarded as the best domestic series in the world. These new initiatives underline our determination to take it to even greater heights.’’
