Athletics: Jones admits surprise at shock defeat

Marion Jones has vowed to bounce back to winning ways after suffering the biggest upset of the World Championships in Canada.

The American incurred her first defeat over 100 metres in four years as she was forced into second place by Ukraine's Zhanna Pintusevich-Block.

But Jones immediately targeted victory in the 200m which gets underway on Wednesday.

She said: "I was surprised to lose. It's not what I expected.

"There are going to be a lot of people out there saying, 'Yeah, she finally got beat' but this happens in sport.

"I have just got to try and quickly recover and get ready for the 200m which I aim to win."

Jones has dominated women's sprinting ever since taking her first world title in Athens in 1997.

But she insisted she was not on the decline, adding: "I don't think I've been as sharp this year.

"I know everyone is going to be fishing around, trying to find something. But I don't think there is any one factor to attribute times that are a bit slower this year.

"But 10.85 is nothing to be disappointed about. I guess I spoiled a lot of people - including myself - running all those 10.7s and 10.6s in the past."

Pintusevich-Block, the Tennessee-based sprinter who triumphed in 10.82secs, said: "I've been thinking and dreaming of this moment for four years, ever since Athens in 1997.

"This must be the happiest day of my life. Beating Marion in the semi-final gave me the confidence to beat her in the final."
