Athletics: Carroll misses out in 5000m semis
Mark Carroll has missed out on a place in the final of the Men's 5000 metres at the World Championships in Edmonton, Canada.
The Corkman finished tenth in his heat, with five qualifying automatically along with the five fastest losers.
Carroll's time of 13:37.37 was the sixteenth fastest of the two heats, but only fifteen went through.
Carroll started strongly and ran away from the chasing group along with Norway’s Marius Bakken, but they were drawn back into the chasing pack halfway through the race.
In hot conditions at high altitude, Carroll's card was played, and although his heat was by far the faster of the two, Carroll was pipped for the final place.
