Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe has shattered his own 200m freestyle world record to claim a fourth gold medal at the World Championships in Japan.

Thorpe clocked a time of 1:44.06 in the 200m freestyle final today, avenging his defeat at the hands of Pieter van den Hoogenband in the same event at last year's Olympic Games.
