Horseracing: Lailani leads home famous one-two for Dunlop at Oaks

Lailani led home an Ed Dunlop one-two in the £225,000 Kildangan Stud Irish Oaks when she held her stable-companion Mot Juste by a neck at the Curragh this afternoon.

The filly, supplemented for the race at a cost of £28,000 last Tuesday, was giving the Newmarket trainer and jockey Frankie Dettori their first victory in the Irish fillies’ Classic.

Chamela Bay, one of six Aidan O’Brien runners as the Ballydoyle trainer bid to win his fourth Irish Classic of the season, set the early pace. She was eight lengths clear at one stage before being swamped in the final quarter-mile as Mot Juste struck the front.

But Dettori timed his run to perfection on the outside and drove Lailani (5-1) into a narrow lead over Richard Hughes on Mot Juste (8-1) inside the final furlong which she kept to the line.

Karsavina (9-1) fared best of the O’Brien sextet, finishing third.

Lailani, backed down from 7-1, ended up second-favourite behind Relish Relish The Thought (4-1), who was unplaced.
