Athletics: Pregnant Sonia on the run

Sonia O’Sullivan will compete in next month’s Great North Run in Manchester even though she is expecting a second child.

The Olympic 5000 metres silver medallist surprised her fans when announcing a few weeks ago she would not compete in August’s World Championships in Edmonton.

Now the 31-year-old is pregnant again. Her first child Ciara was born in July 1999.

A clash with Liz McColgan in the five-mile race will not happen. The Scot, planning a marathon comeback in the autumn, has withdrawn because she does not feel ready for a race.
