Boxing: Three out of four not bad for fighting Irish

Day Two of the World Amateur Boxing Championships at Belfast's Odyssey Arena emerged as a relatively successful on for the Irish.

The day was rounded off with an emphatic victory for team captain and Irish welterweight champion Jim Moore over European semi-finalist Darius Jasevicius of Lithuania.

Four-times Irish champion Damien McKenna enjoyed a points success in his bantamweight bout against China's Xiong Rong Zhao, earning a 13-7 victory. McKenna had a pounding final round, not giving Zhao a chance to escape.

Michael Kelly also made it through when he comfortably outpointed Algeria's Olympic bronze medallist Arelu 17-7 in their light-welterweight contest.

Bad news though for Belfast's Liam Cunningham, who barely lasted 60 seconds against Olympic silver medallist and current European flyweight champion, Volodymyr Sydorenko.

The Ukrainian floored Irish flyweight champion Cunningham with a strong right which was merely a taste of things to come.

After a count of eight, Cunningham walked straight into another quick right, which was enough to prompt the referee to end the bout.
