Motorsport: Bell shatters race record
Donegal's, Damien Faulkner finished seventh in the fourth round of the Dayton Lights Championship at Milwaukee where fellow Irishman, Derek Higgins was out of the race in the early stages.
In a bizarre incident, Higgins, the pre-event championship leader, was involved in an incident during the third pace lap. His car and that of Jon Fogarty came together as Fogarty swerved to warm-up his tyres and Higgins accelerated forward from row two.
Higgins spun into the pits where he retired on the spot with right front damage while Fogarty drove into the pits. He rejoined the race after extensive repairs and finished in 10th place.
Pole sitter, Bell, lapped the entire field and shattered the 12-year-old race record by nearly 18 miles per hour to score his fourth career victory.
It was his second win of the 2001 season and he is the new leader of the series after finishing a lap and 3.153 seconds ahead of Mario Dominguez.
Dan Wheldon finished third, two laps down.
Damien Faulkner took seventh place to move into sixth in the series, he retains his lead in the Oval category. Meanwhile, in the Nations Cup. Ireland lead USA by three points.
