In the men’s race at the World Cross Country Championships in Ostend, home favourite Mohammed Mourhit retained his title.

The 30-year-old was born in Morocco but is a naturalised Belgian.

The Irish men’s team had a good performance to finish sixth in the team rankings.

In the women’s short course event, Kenya’s Gete Wami gained revenge for her defeat by Paula Radcliffe on Saturday by out-sprinting the English woman to the line.

Sonia O’Sullivan also started the race despite feeling unwell, but she dropped out after only two minutes.
