Athletics: Beleaguered selectors can't replace Ryan

The long-running saga surrounding a replacement for Rosemary Ryan on the Irish women's team for this weekend's World Cross-Country Championships has come to an end.

The Athletics Association of Ireland will not now nominate a replacement for Ryan, as no one wants to replace her.

The AAI had hoped to nominate Maureen Harrington or Valerie Vaughan in her place, but both athletes were upset at having been overlooked for the team.

Harrington announced her international retirement last week, after selectors chose her for the long-course race, and not her preferred short-course distance.
