There were mixed fortunes for both Irish contenders in the opening qualifying round of the year's first grand slam tennis tournament in Melbourne today.

Kelly Liggan, ranked 238th in the world, overcame home favourite Kristen van Elden 7-3 6-3 early this morning, and now meets Sophie Georges of France in the next round.
