Hockey: Cork Church of Ireland out to upset mighty Lisnagarvey

Cork Church of Ireland will hope to further shatter Lisnagarvey’s air of invincibility as they welcome the EY Hockey League holders to Garryduff tomorrow (2pm).

Hockey: Cork Church of Ireland out to upset mighty Lisnagarvey

The Ulster side’s 19-game winning run came to an end last time out when they needed a late equaliser to snatch a draw with mid-table Three Rock Rovers, while C of I have won three on the bounce to lie just a point behind joint leaders Monkstown and ‘Garvey.

Neil Welch’s side are the joint top scorers with 17 strikes coming in those three victories over Pembroke, UCD and Railway Union, but they’ll need John Jermyn and Julian Dale at their sharpest to overturn the champions tomorrow.

The women’s EYHL returns after a month-long break with Cork Harlequins and Hermes-Monkstown leading the way.

There’s mixed news on some of Quins’ summer signings since that layoff.

Caoimhe Perdue got an Ireland U18 call-up after her heroics in Munster colours at the U18 interpros, but Michelle Barry hurt her knee playing for Cork IT in the intervarsities in Belfast last weekend so will likely miss tomorrow’s visit of Belfast Harlequins to Farmers Cross.

In the provincial leagues, Cork C of I will hope they can continue to set the pace in Munster’s Division 1A with Clonakilty the next hurdle for Chris Blaney’s charges.

Second plays third as Catholic Institute visit Ashton but with just six points separating top from bottom in a season laden with draws thus far, Bandon’s clash with Limerick and UCC’s visit to Waterford could see any of those sides move into contention.

On the men’s side, leaders Bandon have a tricky test away to C of I B while UCC will look to bounce back from a disappointing Mauritius Cup campaign that saw them relegated from the top intervarsity division when they welcome Limerick to the Mardyke.
