Munster derby honours for Cork Harlequins

The ever-growing gap between the EY Hockey League and the provincial leagues was evident as big scorelines littered the women’s Irish Senior Cup first round on Saturday.

Munster derby honours for Cork Harlequins

Ulster Elks, bidding to become the first side to win three titles in a row since 1950 but with only two of last year’s side still in situ, crashed to a 7-0 home defeat to Railway Union.

UCD ran up the biggest win of the day with a 9-0 dispatch of Old Alex, while Hermes put five unanswered strikes past Corinthian and Chloe Brown and Lucy McKee shared hat-tricks in Ards’ 6-1 dismissal of Muckross.

Cork Harlequins won the Munster derby with UCC 3-0 while the province’s other entrant, Limerick, gave Belfast Harlequins a walkover.

Domestically, Cork C of I moved top of Munster’s Division 1A with a 4-0 success in Waterford while Catholic Institute’s 3-1 win over Bandon has them just a point behind.

Ashton are yet to win a game but their third successive score draw — 1-1 in Clonakilty — has moved them into third.

Elsewhere, Lisnagarvey’s 21-game winning streak in the men’s EY Hockey League was brought to an end by Three Rock Rovers but it might have been even worse for them but for Sean Murray’s late equaliser.

Banbridge got back to the bread and butter of domestic hockey with a thrill-a-minute 3-3 draw against Monkstown at Havelock Park.

Those results mean both Garvey and Town’s perfect starts to the season have come to an end, leaving them on 10 points with Cork C of I up to third thanks to their 6-2 thumping of Railway Union.

They did so in spite of John Jermyn’s red card. He scored twice along with Stephen Sweetnam.

At the bottom, UCD got their first ever win in the EYHL with a 3-2 success against Instonians. Pembroke nicked an important win over winless Glenanne 2-1 to rise to fifth.
