Irish boxers were warned about gambling before the Olympics

All Irish boxers were “fully informed” ahead of the Olympic Games that they were not allowed to bet on any other events in Rio, Irish Athletic Boxing Association president Pat Ryan (IABA) has confirmed.

And the IABA expects to take “appropriate action” against any boxers found to have broken their Olympic contracts.

Speaking on RTÉ’s This Week programme, Ryan said: “All the Olympians have signed contracts and the contracts are very explicit. There are regulations in it on gambling which bans them from participating in betting on Olympic events and providing inside information to gamblers. So it’s very explicit and they are fully aware of this regulation.
