Dutch rampant as Ireland get ready for Olympic Games
It was the first of two warm-up games in preparation for the Olympics and, while the Dutch were dominant, it was Ireland that were first to be presented with an opportunity, when their opponents gave away a stroke early in the game. Ireland’s top goal scorer John Jermyn couldn’t find the net, though, as his attempt was easily saved by net-minder Stockmann.
Mink Van der Weerden made no mistake from a short corner, as Netherlands got the scoring underway, before Sander de Wijn fed Jeroen Hertzberger to make it 2-0 minutes later.
Chris Cargo was quick to reply for the home team, however, as he benefited from a deflection following a Jermyn drag flick, much to the delight of the Mardyke crowd.
There wasn’t much to cheer about from there on, as a Dutch onslaught ensued. Billy Bakker got his name on the score sheet, before Van der Weerden and Mirco Pruijser devastated Ireland with two goals in the space of a minute in the third quarter.
The first half didn’t hold much hope for the Irish, despite their best efforts to survive the Dutch attack. Valentin Verga shot from an impressive angle to make it 6-1, before John Jackson replied when he cut inside from the left wing and rifled the ball passed Stockmann. Jorrit Croon, aged 17, topped off proceedings.
Ireland meet the Netherlands again tomorrow at 7pm at the Mardyke.
