The Mardyke last night welcomed back international hockey to its ground after eight years, with Ireland overpowered by the Netherlands on a 7-2 scoreline.

It was the first of two warm-up games in preparation for the Olympics and, while the Dutch were dominant, it was Ireland that were first to be presented with an opportunity, when their opponents gave away a stroke early in the game. Ireland’s top goal scorer John Jermyn couldn’t find the net, though, as his attempt was easily saved by net-minder Stockmann.

Mink Van der Weerden made no mistake from a short corner, as Netherlands got the scoring underway, before Sander de Wijn fed Jeroen Hertzberger to make it 2-0 minutes later.
