Is this the worst play in NFL history?

The basics of American football seemed to be completely lost on the Colts last night as they attempted a bizarre play against the Patriots.

Approaching the end of the third quarter, the Colts set up for a fake punt aimed to confuse the Patriot’s defence. And it did, for a split second.

Before the snap, all but two of the Colts ran to the right leaving just wide receiver Griff Whalen and safety Colt Anderson to run the snap. This is what it looked like:

I know what you’re thinking. Surely they didn’t snap that. Oh but they did. The inevitable then happened.

What were they thinking? The Patriots regained possession, went down the other end and extended their lead to 13 points.

To add insult to injury, the Colts were flagged for an illegal formation which the Patriots declined. So, not only was the move extremely stupid, it wasn’t even legal!

Back to the drawing board gents.
