Twelve months ago the Peugeot Rally Academy driver netted a maiden win for himself and the Peugeot 208 T16 on the Acropolis. This season, the former Billy Coleman award winner made a dream start to the ERC and won three events in succession including the Circuit of Ireland. However, he has been out of luck on most of the events in recent times with the car’s reliability, for the most part, proving to be his downfall.
He didn’t compete in the last round in Cyprus a few weeks ago but did have an outing in the Tour de Corse round of the World Rally Championship last week.
In Cyprus, Polish ace Kajetan (Kato) Kajetanowicz (Ford Fiesta R5) extended his lead in the ERC but with 78 points still on the table, a win in Greece would ignite Breen’s title bid.
A 43.41 km stage opens proceedings tomorrow followed by the service halt and another stage. There are seven stages on Sunday.
On the domestic front, there’s an over-subscribed entry for the Donegal Harvest Rally in Burt. Initially, there were as many as 50 reserves but some of the original 131 seeded crews have withdrawn and paved the way for a few of the reserves to have a competitive outing.
Last year’s winner, Declan Boyle, heads the entry in his state of the art Ford Fiesta WRC. The Lettermacaward driver, who had a pre-event test yesterday reckons that his off road excursion in the Galway Summer Rally will not be an impediment over the day’s nine stages.
Meanwhile, Motorsport Ireland are to investigate claims of an alleged interference with one of the competing cars during last weekend’s Acesigns Signmakers Cork “20” International Rally. The governing body was notified by the driver of the car concerned on Tuesday last. Motorsport Ireland confirmed that they will engage with the Munster Car Club organisers, who, unlike most other rally organisers, used a locked down and supervised building for the overnight parc ferme.
The Imokilly Motor Club’s Grass Autocross in Midleton on Sunday (11.30am) is a counting round of the National Autocross (Grass) Championship and the Munster Autocross Championship.
