Philip Brownlow’s sharp backhand finish and Jermyn’s first were cancelled out by Eddie O’Malley and a magnificent Gary Shaw solo effort. But Jermyn converted from the spot after Philip Sweetnam was taken out and added an insurance goal.

Title favourites Monkstown won a high-quality tie littered with international quality at Lisnagarvey on a 5-2 scoreline.

Banbridge exploded into life in the second half to rack up a 6-1 success at Railway Union while Pembroke won 3-1 at Cookstown.

Cork Harlequins and UCC both fell off the pace in the women’s EY Hockey League with home defeats to Ulster Elks and Railway Union.

Goals from Megan Frazer and Limerick woman Rebecca Barry inside the first five minutes set the Elks on their way to defeating Quins 3-1. UCC alum Julia O’Halloran was on target twice for Railway against her former side as they cruised home 4-0.

Anna O’Flanagan made it five goals in two games as she was again central to a 5-1 Hermes win over Ards while Elaine Carey scored twice as UCD routed Greenfields 4-0.
