Bandon hold mighty Quins

Hockey

Bandon caused one of the biggest upsets of the Munster Women’s Division One season as they held champions Cork Harlequins to a 1-1 draw on Saturday.

Laura Buttimer finished off a good team move for the West Cork girls to put them ahead in the first half against a Quins side missing their internationals Cliodhna Sargent and Yvonne O’Byrne.

Quins equalised with a move started and finished by Rachael Kohler, with Niamh O’Leary’s trickery in between creating the opening for the decorated former international to finish.

But Bandon’s organised defence — despite the absence of New Zealand-bound Kate Murphy — held out thereafter, limiting their opponents to just two short corners to claim a fine result.

Elsewhere, Caroline McCarthy and Claire Hickey swapped goals as Ashton and Cork C of I drew for a second time this season.

Belvedere and Waterford looked right at home as the sides coming up to the new Division 1 Challenge, with very respectable results against teams coming down from Division 1.

Lorraine McGowan’s goal proved crucial for Limerick as they held off Belvedere 1-0, while Waterford held Cashel/New Inn to a 1-1 draw. Fermoy’s clash with Tipperary wasn’t played due to a frozen pitch.

In Division 1B, Katie Murphy’s brace got Cobh off to a flyer with a 3-0 success at UL, while Marie O’Mahony cancelled out Susan McCourt’s effort to give Blackrock a 1-1 draw with Cork Wanderers.

Cork C of I powered away from Cork Harlequins to advance in the Munster Senior Cup, Stephen Parker’s double and goals from Alex Burns and Philip Sweetnam the vital interventions in a 4-1 success.

Stephen Sweetnam and Philip Brownlow then helped C of I’s seconds see off their Quins counterparts 2-0 in the Munster Junior Cup.

Limerick’s pace and power proved too much for an Ashton side shorn of half a dozen regulars, Andrew Tutty and Luke Cardy’s doubles doing the damage in a 7-0 rout. UCC’s Munster Senior Cup clash with Bandon fell victim to the weather.
