Cully too good for Joyce in all-Kildare lightweight clash

Former European Youth gold medallist Gary Cully came out on top won in the clash of the Kildare lightweights at last night’s National Intermediate Championships finals at Dublin’s National Stadium when the St David’s BC southpaw beat Hughie Joyce of the St Michael’s Athy BC.

Cully, a gold medal winner at the 2012 European Youths in Rotterdam, edged round one, but Joyce, finding the target off both hands with big shots, won the second.

However, Cully, using his raking jab as the triggering mechanism for sweeping backhands, claimed the third and a unanimous decision.

Limerick bantam Myles Casey, brother of ex European pro champion Willie “Big Bang” Casey, took the 54kg belt following an explosive final with Belfast’s Ryan Adams.

Orla McInerney TKO’d Emma Gallagher in the third last night and Emma Agnew stopped Emma McGlynn in the first, while Cork’s Barry Walsh beat Dublin’s Dylan Tang in the featherweight final.

Noel McBride beat Sean Hunt in last night’s 67kg decider and the judges split in favour of Claire Sweetman versus Aoife Hennigan.
