Irish bid for gold

Boxing: Two Irish boxers will be aiming for gold in today’s finals at the European Junior Championships in Anapa, Russia.

Monaghan’s Aaron McKenna and Laois’ Michael Nevin are guaranteed silver medals after convincing wins yesterday.

But Galway southpaw Kieran Molly had to settle for bronze after dropping a split decision to Artur Mamberger, despite the German taking a standing count in the final round.

McKenna pursued Lithuania Artura Zunkovski all through to earn a unanimous (30-26,30-27,29-28) decision. He faces Italy’s Damiano Cordella today, one win away from adding a European Junior gold to the European Schoolboy gold he won in Dublin last year.
