Sport has always been about onwards and upwards but the ongoing professionalisation of team sports may be to blame for a decrease in the number of young males taking part in physical activity, according to the latest Irish Sports Monitor report.

The document, the fifth of its kind to be published, has returned a largely encouraging update on the ways and means by which the Irish population engages in sporting and other physical activities.

However, one surprising finding was that young males are less likely to play sport than was the case in 2011, with the 2013 report suggesting that may be a result of the higher commitment levels to sustain involvement.
