McMahon misses out on Euro final by less than a second

SWIMMING: Ireland’s Sycerika McMahon finished 12th overall in the 200m individual medley semi-finals at the European Swimming Championships in Berlin yesterday.

McMahon put in an impressive performance to finish just 0.75 of a second off a final position. Her time of 2:14.42 was a season’s best and only 0.04 of a second off her personal best.

Meanwhile, there was disappointment for Brendan Hyland who did not make it out of the 200m butterfly heats. In the 200m breaststroke Dan Sweeney was disqualified for an infringement after the first turn while Nicholas Quinn was unlucky not to make the semi-final, missing out by just 0.6 of a second when touching in 2:14.82.
