McCabe celebrates remarkable hat-trick

Ireland’s Conor McCabe was last night celebrating a remarkable hat-trick of victories over overseas opponents in the Tennis Europe Under-14 Circuit event in Dublin.

After a 6-2 6-0 win over Germany’s Jean Krautter on Saturday in the qualifying first round, McCabe followed up yesterday with a 6-1 6-1 success over Britain’s Russell Henderson in the qualifying second round at the National Tennis Centre at DCU, Dublin.

And later in the first round of the main draw, McCabe maintained his victory run with a 6-2 7-5 victory over Sweden’s Alex Olsson-Mork to clinch a second round battle against Germany’s Oliver Tobisch, a 6-2 6-0 winner over Ireland’s James Battle.

Other home victories against overseas rivals in the boys’ singles were respectively recorded by Robert McCollum and Daniel Vlas against Poland’s Wojtek Szczesny (6-2 6-3) and Germany’s Jean-Luc Gassmann (6-0 6-1).

Meanwhile David O’Hare crashed out in the qualifying second round of the ITF Futures event in Bejar, Spain.

Yesterday in his qualifying second round match the Ireland Davis Cup player came up short on a 6-4 4-6 6-3 margin against Javier Amantegui, a 16-year-old from the host country.

Originally, O’Hare had planned to take part in next week’s Futures in Ourense, Spain, near Vigo, but he has decided to withdraw from the event.
