Extra push gets St Brendan’s through

Currow 0-13 St Brendan’s 3-13 (AET)

Jack Barry inspired the victors, who struggled to field a team, to come good late on and earn a third round meeting with Dingle in Tralee on Saturday July 12. Forced to field without the John Mitchels contingent, whose club withdrew their players because of an internal dispute with the St Brendan’s Board and two Kerry hurlers who did not show, they still won with just six players who featured in the opening round.

But Currow were simply not good enough, and despite the superb contributions of Shane O’Leary, Dan O’Sullivan, Seamus Scanlon and, in particular, Ian Somers, they lacked the scoring power.

St Brendan’s started slowly and depended on some exemplary defending from Barry, Mikey Brennan and the Horgans, Rory and Fionán, to survive. But as the game wore on they improved before completely taking over in extra time.

Currow led by 0-8 to 1-3 at the end of the opening half, with Seamus Scanlon the dominant figure and Somers used in the unusual role at full forward. But points from Mike McCarthy (two), Garreth O’Connor (two), Seamus Flynn, Seamus Brosnan, John O’Connor and Somers gave them an early lead. Only a well-taken goal by Ivan Parker in the 25th minute kept St Brendan’s in it.

They improved in the second half though as Barry became a central figure putting in some big hits in defence, driving forward and setting up countless attacks to diminish the influence of Scanlon and forcing Somers further away from the goal.

Ivan Parker kicked three second-half points while sub Andy Byrne kicked two, including the equaliser in the last minute of normal time.

With the impetus behind them and Currow looking a spent force, St Brendan’s took over, with goals from Kieran Hurley and Ivan Parker.
