Jilted Caroline crashes out of French Open

Caroline Wozniacki completed her miserable week by losing to Yanina Wickmayer in the first round of the French Open yesterday.

The Dane was making her first public appearance since Rory McIlroy called off their engagement last Wednesday and despite having plenty of support on Court Two, Belgian Wickmayer triumphed 7-6 (7/5) 4-6 6-2.

Wozniacki, 23, said she “just has to move on” after losing yesterday, before admitting the break-up “came as a bit of a shock”.

The 13th seed said: “I just tried to prepare the best that I could and really tried to focus on my match and what I had to do out there.”

The Dane, a quarter-finalist in Paris in 2010, added: “I want to thank everybody for their support and sweet messages. That’s really nice.

“What happens in my personal life, I just want to really keep that between my closest people around me. I just have to move on.”

Wozniacki added she was not at full fitness following a knee injury, and was unsure of her exact plans in the weeks ahead.

“I haven’t really thought about it,” she said. “I was just so focused on one day at a time and one hour at a time. I haven’t really thought forward. I need to sit down and think about how I can get my knee 100% ready.

“I want to prepare for Wimbledon, which is a big tournament and a better surface for me.”

Her next scheduled event is the grass-court tournament at Eastbourne in June.
