The 2013 bantamweight champion scored a unanimous decision on a night of contrasting fortunes for the club at Dublin’s National Stadium.
Geraghty had one eye on today’s quarter-final with defending champion Sean McComb: “I’m happy with that and hopefully I can add to it tomorrow,” said Geraghty, who was switching from southpaw to orthodox throughout the three rounds.
Geraghty and Campbell created their own bit of history last night as their clash was the first fight in 25 years in which boxers didn’t wear head guards at an Elite Championships.
Meanwhile, 2011 European Youth bronze medallist Joe Fitzpatrick advanced after James McDowell was disqualified for spitting out his gum shield for a fourth time in the second round.
Sean Montgomery edged out Martin Noonan on a split decision, while Sean Duffy — following an excellent three-rounder -— advanced at the expense of Paul Hyland.
Michael Nevin, Ciaran Bates and Dean Walsh, a nephew of Irish head coach Billy Walsh who was working his corner, and Rohan Date also triumphed.
Meantime, two-time Olympic bronze medallist Paddy Barnes is seeded No 2 at the championships he missed last year due to flu. The Belfast light-fly will meet Blaine Dobbins next weekend at the semi-final stage.
