She said: “It’s been such an amazing week. I would like to thank everyone for all their support and help especially my coaches.”
Desmond, who boxes out of the Macroom BC, was edged out on a split decision by Kazakh orthodox Gauhar Yermekbay in Saturday’s Youth final.
Irish team manager Anna Moore and IABA director of boxing development Dominic O’Rourke believed Desmond had done enough to win the welterweight four-rounder.
“I thought I did enough to win it as well, but you win some and you lose some, that’s boxing. I’m delighted to be taking home a silver for Ireland,” said the southpaw.
Irish women’s boxing has now claimed 18 gold, silver and bronze medals — and two boxer of the tournament awards — in world and EU competition in the last four months.
