Big right lands big reward for Athy’s Donoghue

Willie Donoghue claimed gold for Ireland following a nail-biting finish to his light-flyweight final at the AIBA World Junior Championships in the Ukraine.

Donoghue, who boxes out of the St Michael’s Athy BC in Kildare, beat Danny Gonzalez of the USA on a split decision (30-27, 29-28, 27-30) to secure the 48kg title in Kiev.

The Irish champion took the first round but the Californian, a US Golden Gloves champion, won the second to leave it all square.
