Drummy sisters celebrate

The Drummy family had cause for major celebration after collecting three titles in the William Fry National Junior Championships, at Fitzwilliam LTC on Saturday.

Sixteen-year-old Nicola came up trumps in both the U18 girls’ singles and U18 girls’ doubles finals, while 13-year-old Georgia captured the U14 girls’ singles title.

Nicola , like Georgia a member of the nearby Donnybrook club, sprang a surprise in the U18 girls’ singles decider, making light of her No 3 seeding to record an emphatic 6-3 6-2 win over the top seed, Carrickmines’ Holly Monaghan.

And in the U14 girls’ singles final, Georgia justified her top seeding with a 6-3 6-4 success over the No 2 seed, Eimear Maher, from the Naas club.

In the U18 girls’ doubles decider, Nicola teamed up with Rusbrooke’s Rachel Dillon for a 6-3 6-1 win over Sandycove’s Ruth Dillon and Fitzwilliam’s Aubree Ryan-Flynn.

The Drummy sisters are daughters of former Munster interprovincial player Victor Drummy.

In the U14 boys’ singles final, Lansdowne’s Sean Collins upset the form book, the No 2 seed overcoming top seed Simon Carr, son of Dublin football legend Tommy Carr, 6-3 3-6 7-5.

Meanwhile, Ireland’s James McGee chalked up his first singles title of the year thanks to a hard-earned 6-4 7-6 (7/4) win over the No 2 seed, India’s Jeevan Nedunchezshiyan, in the final of the ITF Futures event in Libreville, Gabon.

In the doubles final, Limerick’s Sam Barry and France’s Elie Rousset, the No 2 seeds, were pipped by the top seeds, Nedunchezshiyan and fellow countryman Vishnu Vardhan, 6-4 7-6 (7/4).
