Andy a shoo-in for BBC award

Bookmakers say Andy Murray’s heroics on Centre Court at SW19 mean the Briton is a shoo-in for this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

The Scotsman, who finished third at last year’s ceremony following an emotional Wimbledon final defeat to Roger Federer coming weeks before an Olympic gold medal, is all but guaranteed to take the sporting gong, according to bookies.

Paddy Power have Murray at 1/25 to win the SPOTY and have trimmed the odds on the royal couple naming their imminent arrival Andrew from 40/1 to 14/1.

Murray is also tipped to get a knighthood, having been awarded an OBE in the New Year Honours list.

Bookmakers face a multi-million pound payout to punters after Murray’s victory over Novak Djokovic.

A spokesman for Paddy Power said: “We were delighted to see Murray storm his way through to a straight set Wimbledon win, but coughing up £2m made it bitter sweet. Our punters will be popping champagne corks until Monday morning.”

Coral spokesman David Stevens said: “Andy Murray’s name was on tens of thousands of betting slips this weekend, and his victory has given punters the ultimate revenge over the bookies after years of us winning.

“The industry will be paying out millions, perhaps as many as ten,”

William Hill described Murray’s victory as “our worst ever Wimbledon result”. The firm is offering odds of 8-11 for the sportsman to be engaged to his girlfriend Kim Sears before the start of next year’s tournament.
