Injured Hickey doubt for Euro Championships in Belarus

Irish Elite champion Ross Hickey had an operation on his broken left forearm in the Czech Republic yesterday and is a major doubt for June’s European Championships in Belarus.

Injured Hickey doubt for Euro Championships in Belarus

Hickey suffered the injury in Thursday’s quarter-final win over Austrian light-welter Khamsad Musaev at the Usti nad Labem Grand Prix.

European champion Ray Moylette, who Hickey beat 15-11 in February’s Irish Elite final, now looks likely to be called up for Belarus.

Hickey missed the 2011 European Championships in Turkey because of work commitments and Moylette was drafted in and won gold.

Meanwhile, Sean McComb and European U23 champion Jason Quigley are through to today’s lightweight and middleweight finals at the Usti nad Labem Grand Prix.

McComb beat Germany’s Amet Eminovic 13-7 yesterday and Quigley beat China’s Zhou Yunfei 14-7. Tommy McCarthy lost 7-2 to Slovakia’s Sandro Dirnfeld
