Thornton toast of Brunell

The Cork club, who had already won the U18 title on the eve of this game, were outstanding from start to finish and what a day it proved for 16-year-old Edel Thornton.

Thornton became the first player in the history of these championships to be voted MVP in both finals and her 35-point contribution helped her complete a memorable double.

“Without sounding cocky, it’s nice to get recognised but this was all about the 12 players in both grades and it will be a weekend I will never forget,” Thornton said.

Both teams competed hard in the opening quarter but a late Michelle Clarke basket tied the game at 15 points apiece.

Brunell showed their class in the second period and with the outstanding Thornton completing the half with 15 points, the Cork side commanded a 36-24 lead.

Killester were always chasing the game and with Megan O’Leary also having a superb game at the point, Brunell went on to become worthy champions.

After the game the Brunell coach Gary Blount paid tribute to his troops.

“What can I say with such a brilliant group of girls and I am sure many of them will become household names in Irish basketball.”

Brunell: E Thornton 35, M O’Leary 13, A Kearney 11.
