Six Irish still in hunt for gold

Beijing Olympians Ken Egan, John Joe Joyce, Ross Hickey, David Oliver Joyce and Conrad Cummings recorded quarter-finals wins at the Elite Tammer tournament yesterday.

Egan, a silver medal winner in Beijing, posted a comprehensive 11-4 decision over England’s Lawrence Osueke in the light-heavy class in Tampere, Finland.

Hickey, Joyce, David Oliver Joyce and Cummings also progressed on impressive verdicts with Hickey hammering Italy's Luva Melis 29-10.

There was some disappointment for the Irish camp with Michael Nevin losing out to Hungary's Krisztian Nagy yesterday but the others will join Tipperary's Con Sheehan in today's semi-finals.

All Irish boxers are guaranteed at least bronze from the 19-nation tournament.
