Shock defeat for Jet in Derby heat

A shock defeat for Droopys Jet and the elimination of that great old veteran Tyrur Big Mike were the major talking points last night at Shelbourne when the first eight heats in the second round of the Ladbrokes Irish Derby were run.

Droopys Jet looked set for victory when getting away fast from the four trap in Heat 5 and he went clear to the bend from Tyrur Willyjoe. But the danger signals began to flash when Skywalker Puma tracked brilliantly to move into second on the second bend. Skywalker closed into the third and then got up close home for a three parts of a length verdict over Droopys in 29.70.

Tyrur Big Mike missed the start in Heat 6 and after running wide on the corner he was never in contention. However the Francie Murray trained Cesarewitch winner Subway Ruth broke smartly from trap five and led up. Once in front she was never going to be beaten and ran on strongly for a length and a half margin over Killbarry Rover in 29.67.

Liam Dowling’s Ballymac Vic gave supporters an early fright when tardy into stride in Heat 4 as Tyrur Wozniacki flew out and cut across to the inside. However Ballymac really flew up and sneaked through on the inside of Wozniacki on the bend before racing on to win impressively by three and a half lengths from Tyrur in 29.62.

Run of the night was the 29.58 from the Owen McKenna trained Airforce Diva in Heat 7. She broke fast and led Melodys Lucky into the back. The latter closed to the third bend but then Airforce Diva upped the tempo and flew up the stretch for a three length margin in 29.58 with Forest Ralph some three and a half lengths third.

McKenna completed a smashing double when Confident Rankin won the final heat in 29.93. Here Razldazl Bugatti led up and had a length and a half in hand at halfway. But Confident Rankin rallied to hit the front between the final bends and won by two lengths from Razldazl in 29.93 with Star Head three lengths third.

Brendan O’Shea’s Crossfield Star gave a strong performance when winning Heat 3 in 29.82. He was soon in front and was never troubled as he won by four and a half from Razldazl Apollo.
