New record for Hyland

Brendan Hyland’s fantastic form continued yesterday at the European Junior Championships in Antwerp as he became the first Irishman ever to swim under two minutes in the 200m Butterfly.

In the process he set Irish Junior and Senior records, having already set new figures on Thursday.

Hyland finished fifth in 1:59.92, just 0.14 seconds off a medal spot.

Great Britain’s Mathew Johnson took gold in 1:58.50.

Hyland competes in the 100m Butterfly tomorrow.

The boys’ 4x200m Freestyle Relay team of Curtis Coulter, David Prendergast and the two Brian O’Sullivans, set a new Irish Junior record, smashing the previous record by over 15 seconds, finishing in 7:38.57.

The boys were just 0.12 of a second off the Irish Senior record, currently Ireland’s oldest record, which has stood since 1989.
