The Athy rider had held pole position with Portersize Just A Jiff on 41.4 penalties after Thursday’s first day of dressage, but was overtaken yesterday by Ruth Edge and Two Thyme on an impressive 34 penalties, with the Briton also heading up the feature long-format CCI three-star on Rogersdale.

Just one penalty behind Speirs is Aoife Clarke (Master Crusoe), with Capt Geoff Curran (The Jump Jet) provisional fourth on 44.8pens.
