The Athy rider had held pole position with Portersize Just A Jiff on 41.4 penalties after Thursday’s first day of dressage, but was overtaken yesterday by Ruth Edge and Two Thyme on an impressive 34 penalties, with the Briton also heading up the feature long-format CCI three-star on Rogersdale.
Just one penalty behind Speirs is Aoife Clarke (Master Crusoe), with Capt Geoff Curran (The Jump Jet) provisional fourth on 44.8pens.
Speirs is part of Team Ireland competing for the Dubarry Boyne Trophy with Liz Power (September Bliss) and Mark Kyle (Coolio), but their overnight 141.8pens sees them trail Team GB’s Edge, Ollie Townend and Polly Stockton on 133.2pens.
Sarah Wardell (Killeenduff Boy) is best placed of the Irish ahead of today’s CCI three-star cross-country, holding third place.
In St Gallen, Switzerland, the Irish show jumping team of Billy Twomey (Je t’Aime Flamenco, 4/12), Shane Sweetnam (Amaretto D’Arco 4/8), Cian O’Connor (Blue Loyd, 8/4) and Jessica Kurten (Voss, 9/0) finished sixth of eight countries in the nations cup, which was won by the Netherlands.
